Description

Pickled red onions are a quick and easy way to add tangy flavor and vibrant color to your meals. Perfect for tacos, salads, or as a tasty snack!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup filtered water
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • Optional: whole peppercorns or smashed garlic cloves

Instructions

  1. Thinly slice the red onion as finely as possible.
  2. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine apple cider vinegar, water, sugar, and sea salt. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely.
  3. If desired, add optional spices like peppercorns or garlic and let steep for a few minutes.
  4. Pour the warm brine over the onion slices in a clean glass jar, ensuring all slices are submerged.
  5. Allow to cool at room temperature before sealing and refrigerating. They will be ready in about an hour but taste even better after 24 hours.

Notes

  • Use firm red onions for the best crunch.
  •  Experiment with spices like cumin or mustard seeds for unique flavor profiles.
  • These pickled onions can last up to two weeks when stored in a sealed jar in the fridge.
